Astrology provides unique insights into children’s temperament, personality, and challenges. Understanding the “big three” – Sun, Moon, and Rising signs – allows tailored parenting. This language of understanding fosters empathy and clarity, empowering mothers to support their children’s growth authentically and with compassion.
In the world of spirituality, Astrology provides a very unique lens through which one can view the world. In particular, in motherhood, this lens can get even more interesting! Astrology allows you to uncover specific insights into your child(ren)’s temperament, personality, and even quirks – which make present you with challenges – and can help you navigate communication and support so much more effectively.
Astrology is not magic and mysticism, it’s not woo-woo stuff or hippie nonsense; astrology is a language and some people can speak it and can read it, and some people cannot. Those who cannot often make fun of it as being nonsense, but if they took the time to learn the language, they’d come to see why birth charts and understanding astrology has been around for thousands and thousands of years.
But — it’s so much more than just your sun sign (the zodiac sign that aligns with your birthdate). So, let’s dive in and better understand the big three.
Astrological Parenting 101: Understanding and Nurturing Your Child’s Unique Cosmic Blueprint
The Big Three: Sun, Moon, and Rising Signs
Depending – down the the minute and specific location – of where you are born, there are three big components of an astrological chart that have an overarching impact on who your child truly is. Your big three are your sun sign, moon sign, and rising sign. You will learn infinitely more about your child and how to navigate all your interactions with your child with far greater understanding by narrowing down the big three.

Sun Sign: Core Identity
The Sun sign represents the core identity and ego of an individual, shaping fundamental aspects of a child’s personality. By understanding your child’s Sun sign, you can identify their strengths, preferences, and potential challenges. From a surface level, this is already a great way to guide your parenting and learn how to support them and what they need.
For example, I am an Aquarius Sun. A child who is an Aquarius Sun likely values independence and originality. Encourage their unique interests and allow them the freedom to express themselves creatively. Support their innovative ideas and encourage them to think outside the box.
Moon Sign: Emotional Needs
The Moon sign reflects a child’s emotional needs, inner world, and instinctual responses. Awareness of your child’s Moon sign enables you to provide the emotional support and nurturing environment they require to thrive emotionally, fostering a deeper sense of security and well-being. In addition, it will help you better understand why they react the way they do to certain circumstances or situations.
For example, I am a Leo Moon. A child with a Leo Moon may have a flair for the dramatic and may have big reactions to things you’d otherwise consider small and unimportant. In addition, with a Leo Moon, your child’s emotional needs may revolve around recognition and validation. Provide plenty of praise and encouragement to boost their confidence and self-esteem.
Rising Sign: Outer Persona
Our Rising Sign – also known as the Ascendant – is how we present ourselves to others. I describe it best as the mask we wear in social situations. The Rising Sign influences a child’s outward demeanor and the first impressions that they give off to the world. Recognizing your child’s Rising sign helps you understand how they interact with the world and navigate social situations, guiding your efforts to support their social development and self-expression.
For example, I am a Libra Rising, and this Ascendant sign often dominates how people perceive me (not many can guess I’m an Aquarius Sun!). With a Libra Rising, your child may have a natural inclination towards harmony and diplomacy. Encourage them to seek balance and peace in their relationships and to be considerate of others’ perspectives. They also may naturally present themselves as a leader in social situations – but their Sun Sign may influence how they lead, as well!
Compatibility and Conflict
If you have multiple children and feel like you just get one but not the other, this is likely due to an astrological incompatibility. Just like we can have incompatibility in romantic relationships with certain signs (eg. dating a Gemini made me go clinically insane), so too may we find parenting certain signs to be very difficult because you just don’t jive. Knowing the big three of your child(ren) will help you better navigate your relationship dynamics and allow you to learn how to shift your own behaviour to meet them where they are. Understanding potential areas of harmony and conflict based on astrological compatibility allows parents to navigate differences with empathy and insight, fostering stronger bonds and healthier communication.
Parenting Strategies for Each Sign
By understanding the characteristics, strengths, and challenges associated with the big three of your child(ren), awakened mamas can implement practical strategies to support their child(ren)’s growth and development authentically.

additional advice
Of course, the big three aren’t the only parts of a child’s astrological chart that will reveal not only who they are but who they will be. Astrological transits and milestones, such as Saturn return or Jupiter transit, can impact a child’s development and behavior. The entire language of chart reading is so beautiful but infinitely complex. One of my favourite resources for better understanding astrological charts is the book Astrology For Yourself; It’s one of the most clear and concise ways that I’ve come to better understand astrology – for myself, and for the success of our family relationships.
The most important thing is that you use this information not to feel defeated or more lost about who your child is, but to feel more empowered. It will allow you to better tune into yourself in order that you may better respond and understand your child, but like all aspects of motherhood, this too requires navigating and learning. So, have compassion for yourself, and have compassion for your child(ren) and their big three.
In the realm of spirituality, astrology offers a profound perspective on understanding our children. Delving into the big three of their astrological charts reveals unique insights into their temperament, personality, and challenges, guiding our approach to conscious parenting with newfound clarity and empathy. Astrology is not mere mysticism; it’s a language of understanding, allowing us to decipher the cosmic blueprint of our children’s souls.
Through astrology, we as mothers can tailor our approach to meet our child(ren) where they are, fostering deeper connections and mutual understanding. Whether navigating compatibility or conflict, implementing conscious parenting strategies tailored to each sign empowers us to support our children’s growth and development authentically and in alignment with their spirit.
Ultimately, embracing astrology as a parenting tool invites us to cultivate compassion for ourselves and our child(ren) as we navigate the beautiful, ever-unfolding journey of awakened motherhood. Approach this exploration with curiosity, empathy, and a deep grace and reverence for the cosmic dance of our souls – and should you require guidance along the dance floor, know I’m here to help.
